Catherine, Princess of Wales, Princess Charlotte and Prince George at the Queen’s funeral
London:
Queen Elizabeth II’s great-grandchildren, George and Charlotte, joined the procession of royals behind her coffin at her funeral at Westminster Abbey on Monday.
Prince George, nine, and Princess Charlotte, seven, went for a walk with their mother, Catherine, Princess of Wales. George wore a dark suit while Charlotte wore a black dress and hat.
Queen Elizabeth II will be buried on Monday after a state funeral attended by heads of state from around the world and a historic final ceremonial journey through the crowded streets of London.
Huge crowds gathered in near silence to watch as the Queen’s flag-draped coffin, crowned with the Imperial crown, her orb and sceptre, was slowly carried to a gun carriage from Parliament’s Westminster Hall, where it had lain in state since Wednesday became.
To the sound of fifes and drums, the gun carriage – used at every state funeral since Queen Victoria in 1901 – was then dragged towards Westminster Abbey by 142 younger Royal Navy sailors.
The thousand-year-old church’s tenor bell rang 96 times at one-minute intervals – one for each year of its life – stopping one minute before the service began at 11:00 a.m. (1000 GMT).
The longest-serving monarch in British history died at Balmoral, her retreat in the Scottish Highlands, on September 8 after a year of failing health.
