Everything you need to know about Kylie Jenner’s lion head outfit

Written by Leah Dolan, CNN

Nothing says wild like using an apex predator as a brooch. On Monday, Kylie Jenner stole the show on Schiaparelli’s couture runway in Paris when she arrived in a black velvet strapless dress adorned with a life-size lion’s head – a preview from the label’s Spring-Summer 2023 couture collection , which debuted moments later.

The hyper-realistic fake head (complete with a manicured mane) covered Jenner’s entire torso. She finished the outfit with a pair of black Schiaparelli sling backs with gold embossed toes.

Shortly after taking her seat, Jenner’s surreal lion look was spotted back on the runway alongside a host of other animal ensembles. According to the show notes, the collection was inspired by Dante’s “Inferno” and the nine circles of Hell – a metaphor for the doubts and creative anguish all artists experience, wrote creative director Daniel Roseberry.

Borrowing from the three animals featured in the 14th-century poem, Roseberry has reinterpreted the leopard, lion and she-wolf in the collection; “represents lust, pride, and greed, respectively.” Naomi Campbell modeled a boxy black faux fur coat with a wolf’s head poking out of the left shoulder, while Canadian model Shalom Harlow wore a strapless snow leopard tube dress with a roaring cat’s head bursting through the chest.

The eye-catching pieces were made entirely by hand from foam resin and other man-made materials. Although Schiaparelli states that the pieces are “faux-taxidermy,” the visual parallel to trophy hunting means some social media users may find the collection difficult to appreciate.

But for Roseberry, if the clothes inspire fear, then they’re doing their job. “Inferno, Purgatorio, Paradiso: one cannot exist without the other,” he concluded in the show notes. “It is a reminder that there is no heaven without hell; there is no joy without sorrow; there is no ecstasy of creation without the agony of doubt.”
