Wordle has a built-in way to share your results spoiler-free, so those you sent it to don’t see today’s Wordle word itself, just the colors in your grid to show how well you did.

To share your wordle results, simply complete (or lose) today’s wordle and then wait a moment for the statistics panel to appear on your screen. Then tap on the “SHARE” button.

On PC, the text is simply copied to your clipboard, so you can then paste the text anywhere, whether it’s a private message or a social media status update. When you tap the SHARE button on iPhone or Android, you are given the option to either copy the results to the clipboard or share the results directly to another app on your phone (like WhatsApp or Twitter).

Using Wordle’s built-in sharing feature is a much nicer way to share your results than potentially spoiling the answer for those who haven’t had a chance to play today’s Wordle themselves. So we strongly recommend you to use it!

How to play Wordle

Wordle is wonderfully simple. The goal is to guess the correct five-letter word within six tries. After each guess, the letters of your chosen word are highlighted in green if they’re in the right place, yellow if they’re in the wrong place, or gray if they’re not in the word at all.

With these clues, you can start narrowing down the correct word. Visit the Wordle website to try it yourself!

How did Wordle start?

Wordle started out as a small family game created by software developer Josh Wardle. He created the game so he and his partner could play a fun little word game together during the pandemic, and they quickly realized that there was something very special about this simple little guessing game. After some refinement, Wardle published it on his Power Language website.

The game was released in October 2021 and had two million daily players by the end of the year. It became a viral hit, thanks in large part to the ease with which players were able to share their results spoiler-free on Twitter and other social media sites. In January 2022, Wardle accepted an offer from the New York Times to acquire Wordle for a seven-figure sum. Well done Mr Wardle. Really well done.

Are Wordle words not allowed?

You You can enter any words, but be aware that the actual answer will never be a rude word.

You can type pretty much any five-letter word in the English language, and Wordle will take it as a guess. However, the answer is chosen from a much smaller list of more common five-letter words each day. There are still thousands of possible answers, of course, but that means the answer will never be a word as obscure as say “THIOL” or “CAIRD” or “MALIC” (yes, those are all real words).

There are very rare words that The New York Times doesn’t publish as Answer of the Day, perhaps for reasons related to breaking news or politics. For example, shortly after it became known that Roe v Wade could be overturned in the United States, the NYT decided to change the March 30 word from “FETUS” to “SHINE” because the word “fetus” was too political a Word charged in connection with recent events.

The New York Times has also been careful never to allow what it considers rude words as an answer to a wordle puzzle. But of course, nothing prevents you from using even the dirtiest words as guesses, as long as they are dictionary-accepted words and as long as you realize they will never be the answer.

Wordle getting too easy for you?

If Wordle is getting too easy, there are a few ways you can make the game more challenging for yourself. The first choice is to enable hard mode. You can do this on the Wordle website by clicking the gear icon at the top right of the screen. Hard mode means all letters are highlighted Got to be used in all future guesses. This keeps you from using the usual tactic of picking two words like “OUNCE” and “PAINS” to test all five vowels early.

You can go one step further by playing according to the so-called “Ultra-Hard” rules. This means that every tip you enter Got to might be the answer. If you were just playing hard mode and typed “MOIST” and the “O” turned yellow, then nothing would stop you from making “POLAR” as your next word, although it couldn’t possibly be the answer because you know already that the “O” is in the wrong place. If you are playing “Ultra Hard” rules, this is not allowed. You must follow each clue and make sure that every single word you type is potentially the answer.

If Wordle is still too easy for you after all this, then you can always try one of the many other Wordle-inspired online games that have popped up in the last year. One of our favorites is Worldle, in which you have to guess a country in the world based on its shape. There’s also Waffle, which involves swapping letters in a full grid to complete all the words. Moviedle, which shows you an entire movie in no time and challenges you to guess the movie within six tries; and Quordle, which requires you to solve four wordles at the same time using the same guesses.
