Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) may have just delivered a harsh revenge on fellow Republican senators Rick Scott (Fla.) and Mike Lee (Utah).
He reportedly pulled the two lawmakers from the powerful Commerce Committee after they recently tried to unseat him as Republican leader. An accident? Scott, who confirmed his and Lee’s removal, didn’t seem to believe it.
“That’s what happens when you challenge leadership,” Scott told the New York Post on Wednesday. “It was McConnell’s decision to remove someone who actually ran business and ran the third largest state from a committee I served on for four years.”
McConnell’s office did not immediately respond to a HuffPost request for comment.
Senator Mike Lee (left) and Rick Scott (right) were fired from the Commerce Committee by Senator Mitch McConnell.
After the GOP’s poor performance in the midterm elections, it was Scott who challenged McConnell’s top spot in the Senate while Lee delivered a nomination speech for Scott. Scott lost by a wide margin in a closed vote. “I’m not going anywhere,” McConnell said afterwards.
McConnell said back in November he was not offended by the opposition, but an unnamed GOP senator told The Hill that Scott was likely the victim of retaliation.
“What did he expect?” said the legislator.
All is not lost for the longtime GOP senators. Both still serve on several committees.
