A woman has fallen overboard a luxury cruise ship 18 miles off the Florida coast and died. Shortly after, passengers on the ship got into a fight while waiting to disembark the cruise, the Daily Mail reported.
MSC Cruises crew members had to step in to stop the fight after frustrating passengers aboard the Meraviglia ship, which was sailing from the Bahamas to Florida.
The brawl broke out after the woman fell into the Atlantic around 5am on Thursday morning, according to the report.
According to the report, a search and rescue operation was carried out by the Coast Guard using a helicopter and a 45-foot boat. The body of the 36-year-old woman was recovered nearby two and a half hours later.
The US Coast Guard told the Daily Mail in a statement that despite being rescued, the passenger “suffered fatal injuries” and that the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office will investigate the incident.
The fight erupted when passengers were temporarily prevented from disembarking the ship upon its arrival in Port Canaveral, Florida, video obtained by the Daily Mail shows.
According to the report, US Customs and Border Protection detained a number of passengers who took part in the fight.
One passenger, Marisa Aebi, told the Daily Mail that passengers would not be allowed to disembark until around 12pm
The Italian cruise line said its advanced detection systems immediately alerted it that the woman had fallen overboard and then informed passengers that arrival in Florida would be delayed.
“The body of a 36-year-old woman was recovered from the water approximately 18 miles off the coast of #PortCanaveral on Thursday morning after falling overboard the Meraviglia cruise ship. The cause of the incident is under investigation,” the US Coast Guard said tweeted Thursday.
The US Coast Guard and MSC Cruises did not immediately respond to requests for comment made outside of normal business hours.
