A 10-foot-wide Boston home said to have been built out of defiance has sold for $1.25 million.
According to local legend, a soldier built the house in 1862, returning from the war to find his brother’s house taking up the rest of their common lands.
The two bedroom home is approximately 1,000 square feet with a private garden and roof terrace.

According to a 2015 Boston Magazine article, the North End house was said to have been built to spite the brother of a soldier who occupied the rest of the shared property with expansive apartments while his sibling was away at war.

According to legend, the soldier built the narrow house on the remaining lot in 1862, blocking all sunlight between two sections of his brother’s massive house, according to the magazine.
Despite its small size at just over 1,000 square feet, the two-bedroom home has a full-size kitchen on the first floor, according to its Zillow listing ahead of its September 2021 sale.
Also on the first floor, according to the same listing, is a dining room, lounge area and a door to a balcony overlooking private gardens.
Upstairs on the second floor is the bathroom, laundry room, and sitting area, Zillow’s listing says.
In the only bathroom in the house, a blue backsplash contrasts with exposed brick.
The second floor seating area has a window overlooking some greenery outside.
The windows in the second floor hallway overlook a brick wall of the neighboring property.
A narrow hallway leads past the living room to a staircase.
There is another sitting area on the third floor, according to the house’s Zillow list.
The other half of the floor is listed as a guest room.
The master suite occupies the entire fourth floor and, according to Zillow, has access to a private rooftop terrace.
In the master bedroom there are shelves for clothes in front of exposed brick.
There is space for a niche opposite the bed.
The staircase in the suite leads to the roof terrace where you have a view of the city.
Back on the ground the property has a private garden.
There is some seating for outdoor entertainment.
