“Wick” director talks about “Tsushima” ambitions – Dark Horizons

While promoting John Wick: Chapter 4, the film’s director, Chad Stahelski, previously spoke about the fact that the main franchise will likely take a brief hiatus after the upcoming 169-minute epic installment hits theaters next Friday comes.

With spin-off projects like Ballerina and The Continental on the way, Stahelski himself seems to be taking a step back and contemplating his possible next project. The most likely candidate is his film version of the feudal, Japan-based, award-winning 2020 PlayStation-exclusive Ghost of Tsushima video game.

The game follows Jin Sakai, a samurai warrior and the last surviving member of his clan, who must abandon his traditions and wage an unconventional war for the freedom of the island of Tsushima during the first Mongol invasion of Japan.

Speaking to BroBible’s post-credit podcast, Stahelski says the recent critical and commercial success of the HBO TV series The Last Of Us has set a high bar and it’s one of the few game features that has been a huge hit could become if they were handled with the proper care:

“I hope The Last of Us sheds more light on upcoming video game adaptations. Rainbow Six, Ghost of Tsushima that I’m working on. Both are fantastic projects that I really hope will come to fruition.

But Ghost… it has an amazing story. It’s the anti-samurai samurai movie. It has great themes. We have a lot of pressure and a lot of interest because Last of Us is pushing that, yeah, the curse from video game to film is kind of broken.

It can be done. You just have to give him love and attention. And Ghost, out of probably every other video game [movies] in development, I think this is the one that will land.

It remains the PS4’s fastest-selling first-party IP debut, with more than 2.4 million units sold worldwide in its first three days and more than 8 million units sold a year ago.
