DEWITT, MI – He was already a rock star in the Pez community. Now Michigan’s infamous “Pez Outlaw” is known to a lot more people around the world as the film has climbed into the Netflix top 10.
“The Pez Outlaw” was released on the streaming service a few days ago, on January 19th. It has since appeared in the Trending, New Releases, and Documentary menus. It is now in the top 10 at number 6 for today, January 24th, just behind Glass Onion: A Knives Out Film.
“We were thrilled to see The Pez Outlaw in the top 10 on Netflix today,” the documentary’s director, Bryan Storkel, excitedly told MLive. “It’s clear that the film is resonating with audiences and that word is spreading. Let’s take it to #1!”
The film centers on Steve Glew of DeWitt, Michigan, who has found a way to make a lot of money by selling fake Pez dispensers in the United States that he smuggled in from all over Europe.
“In the 1990s, Pez USA and Pez International operated very independently. The “Pezident” decided what went in the US and what didn’t,” explained a clip from the film’s trailer. “The collectors wanted what was available in Europe.”
Glew eventually traveled to the Pez factories overseas and had them make what they called “Misfits,” or fake Pez, by the millions. He bought them, brought them back to the States and sold them on the black market, making a lot of money doing it.
How did Glew actually get away with it? You’ll learn from the film, but in short, Glew was essentially a step ahead of Pez.

“It’s illegal, but as you’ll see in the movie, Pez doesn’t verify through customs. So when Glew got through customs, nothing stopped him from entering. That’s how he got the Pez through,” Jim Blaine told MLive.
Blaine owns one of the largest Pez collections in the world and runs one of the largest Pez conventions ever, held in Metro Detroit since 2016. He was also in the film and a behind-the-scenes liaison for the film’s directors, Bryan and Amy Storkel.
“Glew sold the Pez to collectors and also to dealers who bought from him in bulk. The products were technically Pez because they came from Pez factories.”
The Pez Outlaw on Netflix runs for 1 hour and 27 minutes.
