Working on the adaptation of Anne Rice’s Mayfair witches was difficult for Alexandra Daddario, but perhaps not for the reasons viewers expect. While the series is filled with spooky scenes and other disturbing images, the actress recently shared how it’s related to a previous bad relationship from her past. She continued with her character, Dr. Rowan Fielding, and her relationship with the mysterious being Lasher.
Mayfair witches only partially explains the dynamic of Rowan and Lasher, as well as Lasher’s greater connection to the Mayfair family. While Alexandra Daddario didn’t provide spoilers in her interview with Den of Geek, she did open up about her personal difficulties filming the show. She spoke about exploring Rowan’s relationship with Lasher and others, and pursuing attractions she shouldn’t:
What was really interesting was delving into her relationship with these men and her attraction to what she wasn’t meant to be attracted to and her attraction to the dark side. That was certainly a challenge. It was just hard. This woman is going through all these very intense feelings and she can’t resist the villain. I related it to a very bad relationship I had, which is probably why I struggled with it. Because it’s that person you can’t stop going back to, even if it’s bad for you. She knows it’s bad for her and she keeps going back. It didn’t have to be played that way. But that’s exactly what went through my mind as I grappled with my relationship with Lasher.
Lasher and Rowan just had their first real big moment Mayfair witches during the street parade, although it’s clear that the being is keen to connect much further with her. Lasher apparently even attempted to trick Rowan into pretending that she was talking to her now-deceased biological mother, Deidre Mayfair, to try and speed up their relationship. If that’s not a red flag, I’m not sure what is.
The 2023 winter timetable
Mayfair witches is just one of many new shows worth checking out in the 2023 winter program.
In Mayfair witches, Rowan seems conflicted about the Lasher character, but is also eager to hear more answers about her biological family, about which she only recently learned details. The only way Rowan can really find those answers is by continuing to interact with the Mayfair family and staying in New Orleans where Lasher can reach them. It’s definitely easy to see how history can reflect a toxic relationship.
While Rowan is going through the equivalent of a toxic relationship in New Orleans, it might be ironic that Alexandra Daddario married her husband, Andrew Form, in the same city. Daddario was married in the French Quarter, and apparently the experience of working in The Big Easy inspired Daddario to choose the location.
When filming Mayfair witches had his struggles for Alexandra Daddario, it’s great to see the actress in another high profile series. She seems to be on the right track since season 1 of The White Lotus, even if her career had faltered a bit before. We hope there is more of her riveting performance and that the series stays on the promising path that gets critics talking.
