Visit of Deputy Secretary of State Sherman to Ukraine – United States Department of State

Assistant Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, Principal Assistant National Security Advisor Jon Finer and Assistant Secretary of Defense Dr. Colin H. Kahl traveled to Kyiv today to meet with President Zelensky, members of the President’s Office and senior Ukrainian officials to reaffirm the United States’ strong and unwavering commitment to Ukraine and its defense against unprovoked Russian aggression . Prior to the visit, the delegation made stops in Germany and Poland to review US security assistance to Ukraine.

While in Kyiv, Deputy Secretary Sherman, Principal Deputy NSA Finer and Under Secretary Kahl met Prime Minister Shmyhal to discuss how US and international aid has helped stabilize Ukraine’s economy and how we, as Ukraine, are building a lasting trade and investment partnership between the US and Ukraine is rebuilding. They also met with Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov to discuss diplomatic efforts and security assistance to strengthen Ukraine’s security capabilities. At a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov and Ukrenergo CEO Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, they reviewed contingency measures to repair and maintain Ukraine’s power system despite brutal, ongoing Russian attacks on critical infrastructure.

During the trip, the delegation heard from young Ukrainians who have adapted their businesses and advocacy to support their fellow citizens even as they look to Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction.
