KINGSTON — Midtown Kingston was busier than usual on Monday with “Severance,” the hit Apple TV+ show, filming scenes for the upcoming second season on location.
A production crew closed off most of Cornell Street from Broadway to Smith Avenue for a car chase scene, according to a crew member. The production returns Tuesday in Midtown Kingston — a little further north on Broadway. Several storefronts near this end of the street had been modified by set designers Monday, including one with a sign reading “Kier Uniforms Co.”, a likely reference to Kier Eagan, the cult-like founder of Lumon Industries, the biotechnology company in the area Show.
Severance is a Dan Erickson-created sci-fi workplace thriller directed by Ben Stiller and Aoife McArdle that premiered on Apple TV+ last February. It stars Adam Scott, Britt Lower, Zach Cherry, John Turturro, Patricia Arquette and Tramell Tillman. The plot revolves around employees of the shady Lumon Industries working on a mysterious project, the details of which have been kept secret from them. To prevent information from leaving the workplace, Lumon has developed a medical procedure called “severance pay,” which separates its employees’ consciousness between their lives on and off the job.
Most of the first season of “Severance” was filmed in New York City and the Bell Labs Holmdel Complex in central New Jersey, but the series shot some scenes in the Hudson Valley cities of Kingston, Beacon and Nyack during February and March 2021 .
Filming on the show’s second season began in October and is scheduled to run through May, according to Production Weekly. The Bronx-based show has been filming scenes in the Hudson Valley, including Kingston, New Paltz and Poughkeepsie, for the past few weeks. Laurent Rejto, president of the Hudson Valley Film Commission, called it a “godsend given the downturn in film and television production.”
There is no confirmed release date for Season 2 of Severance yet. According to a production member who was not authorized to speak to the press, there were some delays in production, some of them due to weather.
“There’s definitely going to be an expansion of the world,” Erickson, the showrunner, said in an interview with Esquire last year. “In Lumon we will see more of the building and we will also see more of the outside world.”
