The Backbone One mobile gaming controller is now available for Android. There isn’t much that differs from the iOS version that launched in 2020. It costs $99.99, swaps out Lightning connectors for USB-C connectors, and comes with a polished, feature-rich companion app that makes gaming on your phone feel like you’re using a console. Insert your phone and you’ll be able to play native Android games, as well as cloud-based titles from Xbox Cloud Gaming and Nvidia GeForce Now.
This controller’s presence in the iOS ecosystem has made it difficult for others to compete in terms of value and outstanding design. In addition to the app offering a console-like interface, the controller itself is comfortable, minimalist, and offers both pass-through charging and a 3.5mm headphone jack to allow for private, lag-free listening.
On the downside, the lack of a strong competitor has made it easier for controllers from companies like Razer, GameSir, and RIG to stand out as viable options for Android. I’m excited to see how this controller coming to Android shakes things up. It might not be worth upgrading if you’re currently happy with your Android controller, but it’s a compelling option if you’re buying for the first time.
