Android users can easily turn on notification history from the Settings app to view missed or deleted notifications for up to 24 hours.
Android Users can easily turn on notification history from the Settings app to view dismissed notifications. The notification system on iPhones remains a mess, but Android offers a much better way to manage those alerts. While users could always read or dismiss notifications, newer versions of Android also allow users to reply to messages directly from the notification panel without having to open the app that originated the notification. Android users can even snooze notifications for a period of time.
Devices running Android 11 and later can restore accidentally deleted notifications by turning on notification history. To do this, go to Settings by double swiping down from the top of the screen, then tap the gear icon in the lower right corner of the drop-down box. Now select ‘notifications,’ and on the next page tap ‘notification history.’ Finally, activate the switch next to ‘Use notification history.’ The new setting will take effect immediately, and all dismissed notifications will appear on the same page afterward. Users can now dismiss any alert from the notification center without worrying about missing important messages.
Recover your deleted notifications
It’s worth noting that since most Android vendors use custom user interfaces to differentiate their software from those of their competitors, the process for enabling notification history may vary slightly depending on the device. The above method works on Pixel phones and other near-stock Android devices from Motorola, Nokia, and Sony. However, the steps to enable notification history are different on a Samsung Galaxy phone. In this case, users need to go to settings and then click “notifications‘ as usual. Next go to ‘Advanced settings‘ and then choose ‘notification history.’ Finally, turn on the toggle on the next screen to turn on notification history on a Samsung phone.
A clean notification shade reduces clutter, but deleting all notifications en masse could result in important alerts, alerts, and messages being accidentally dismissed. While some of these can be retrieved later, others may be lost forever depending on the app and the type of notification. Even for those that can be viewed later, it can be a chore to trawl through a sea of notifications to get to the important ones. With notification history enabled, users never have to miss an important notification from an app again, whether it was closed intentionally or accidentally.
While modern versions of Android make it easy to view notification history, the device doesn’t save all notifications permanently. Instead, there’s a 24-hour time limit, meaning users can only see their notification history for the last 24 hours. There’s a good reason for that, as storing thousands of messages could fill up the storage pretty quickly, and that could be a problem for devices with little storage space. Still, the ability to view notification history is a nice feature in Androidand one that will undoubtedly be appreciated by many users around the world.
