Liverpool FC – LFC becomes first Premier League club to be sustainably certified

Recipients of this certificate must demonstrate that they are minimizing potential negative impacts on the environment, communities and local economies – maximizing the positive impacts and leaving a legacy they can be proud of.

This latest major award is a recognition of the pioneering work that continues across the club from The Red Way initiative, which places sustainability at the core of all LFC activities, including matchday operations, Anfield and the AXA Training Centre.

LFC also landed a double win at the prestigious SEAL 2022 Business Sustainability Awards in honor of the club’s positive and ongoing environmental leadership.

These awards highlight the many improvements made since The Red Way launched in January 2021. It’s LFC’s sustainability approach to creating a better future for its people, its communities and the planet, and it’s now running through every facade of the club.

The overarching goal is that by the end of the 2022/23 season, the LFC will be net zero across all sporting operations, meaning the club will implement its robust carbon reduction plan and offset any remaining carbon emissions.

The club also aims to have 100 percent of club operations powered by low-carbon and clean energy sources by 2025 and to reduce actual operational carbon emissions by 50 percent by 2030. It now uses sustainable fuels in its team buses, reducing CO2 emissions by up to 90 percent compared to conventional diesel.

The BSI certification was awarded to the LFC following a full audit of the club’s sustainability management system. A rigorous process that looks at the entire organization and takes into account not only matchday activities but also the operational framework that underpins the implementation of the club’s sustainable strategy, The Red Way.

All sites (Anfield, AXA Training Centre, the Academy and Distribution Center) have been independently assessed to check activities, products and services that ensure sustainable standards are met.

A presentation was recently held in Anfield where the BSI LFC officially presented the certificate. The award was presented to Hannah Simpkins by Thomas Harrison, Partnership Engagement Manager at BSI, and Andrew Price, Finance Director at BSI.

Hannah Simpkins, vice president of club operations, said, “We are proud to receive this ISO 20121 certification. It’s an amazing honor for the club and a recognition of The Red Way’s strategy. This standard gives us credibility in our approach. Return to sustainability in sport.

“The LFC team took an incredible amount of work and effort to get this certification from the BSI.

“We recognize the responsibility we have as a global football club to inspire and encourage positive behavioral change. With hundreds of millions of fans around the world, we know we’re in a powerful position to influence sustainable decisions in their day-to-day life, which is why it’s hugely important to us.”
