No love lost between Eagles-Giants

Julian Love speaks about Eagles coach Nick Sirianni

Nick Siranni has strayed far from his cringeworthy, double-talk-filled, inaugural press conference in 2021. As the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, he has led the team to back-to-back playoff appearances. This season they have had the best record in the NFC and are playing in the Super Bowl. A feat so impressive that even the Empire State Building paid tribute to her at the behest of New York and the faithful of the Giants.

Just because one of the city’s most notable landmarks can’t maintain its dislike for the Eagles doesn’t mean the rest of the tri-state area will easily follow. Giants safety Julian Love appeared on NFL Network’s Good Morning Football and made sure to provide some shade for the Eagles. His target was Sirianni.

Giants safety Julian Love shadows the Eagles

“He’s got free travel right now” Love said on the program. “You can coach this team.”

Obviously, Love has a lot of respect for the roster that eliminated the Giants from the playoffs two weeks ago, but he’s not convinced of the coach. Siranni spent his entire first season as coach climbing out of the hole he dug on his first day on the job. The Eagles made the playoffs with a 9-8 record, but were beaten in the first round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Love is right that the Eagles’ front office assembled an extremely talented roster after that loss. They drafted good players and also made an important draft day trade to acquire AJ Brown. The Eagles can dominate both lines of scrimmage, they have a large stable of defensive backs, and their talent for offensive ability can break for a long touchdown at any time. Also, Jalen Hurts has played as an MVP candidate this season.

Brandon Graham shoots back

Longtime Eagles Brandon Graham lobbied for his coach on Thursday. His Answer to the media, when asked about Love’s comments, was, “People always have something to say when they’re home.”

Love and the Giants are at home because the Eagles were the team that blew out their opponents in the playoffs this season. They beat the Giants 38-7 in the divisional round.

Also, as good as the Eagles are, they’ve won more than a lot of games. They started hot but then improved after their first loss. Siranni is an attacking oriented coach and prior to Hurt’s injury late in the season they hung 35+ points on three consecutive opponents in Weeks 12-14.

It takes a while for a new coaching staff to get their team to execute a new offense seamlessly, and yes, the learning curve can be accelerated with an overloaded roster. The most important thing that happened in this back and forth, however, is that someone from New York shows some backbone.

Even the giants Answer to the Empire State Building’s post, “I’m only here for the answers,” wasn’t nearly strong enough. The most important part of a rivalry is an open dislike for your rival. Even more important than supporting your own team. That’s what keeps a rivalry burning, constant coals of contempt heaped on the flame.

So maybe love has a belly full of sour grapes. Nothing wrong with that. When one of your city’s landmarks applauds your rival, damage control needs to be pointed out. Constantly being a hater is the only way to keep a rivalry strong.
