Viking’s Territory Purple rumor mill is a two-day chronicle every week. All the rumors of the week are lassoed and placed in two places – Saturday and Sunday articles – for review. Today is the March 18 edition.
Purple Rumor Mill: Thielen’s Free Agent Tour, Dalvin Trade Sweepstakes, 1st Rounder Preference
Remember – rumors are rumours. What you read in these articles over the weekends is what the world is talking about in terms of Vikings, not necessarily things that are going to come to fruition.
Here’s the first batch of the week.
Rumor: Adam Thielen faced the Carolina Panthers, but his next team has yet to be determined.
Beloved ex-Viking Adam Thielen is a true free agent. He can sign with any of the league’s 32 teams. This week he met with the Carolina Panthers and did not leave on a contract. The Athletics Joe Person tweeted On the visit: “WR Adam Thielen is keeping his options open following his visit to the Panthers today, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Signing with CAR remains one of those options.”
Philadelphia Eagles corner Darius Slay also recruited Thielen for a podcast. He said on the Big Play Slay podcast: “If you want to come here to Philly, come to Philly. come here we win But I hope wherever you make it big you find a great home and push the team to do what they do.”
“Adam Thielen, how he got released from Minnesota, it was crazy to me because it wasn’t like they didn’t give him a chance to be the guy they want him to be, even though they have an amazing No .1 have. ‘ Slay elaborated.
Other teams in the Thielen rumor mill include the Indianapolis Colts, Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs. Thanks to the Kevin Stefanski connection, we’ll also throw the Cleveland Browns out for surveillance.
Ultimately, Thielen feels like the smartest game or safest bet at Kansas City.
Rumor: There is a major Dalvin Cook Sweepstakes running.
The Miami Dolphins reportedly want a piece of Dalvin Cook earlier this week, but Mike McDaniel and friends eventually reunited the gang when they ran back with new signings Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson.
The Atlanta Falcons appear to be reasonable trading partner for Cook – if the Vikings even buy the 27-year-old. Cook could return to Minnesota for a seventh season; It’s just that his $14.1 million cap hit is confusing for a team that employs an analytics-focused general manager.
The Cook rumor mill has been noisy for the past week and a half. In will not let up until traded, released or restructured.
Rumor: The Viking draft plan is emerging and could include an early turn WR or CB.
The Vikings have plenty of roster gaps in their first week of free agency with the additions of Josh Oliver (TE, Ravens), Marcus Davenport (EDGE, Saints), Byron Murphy (CB, Cardinals) and Dean Lowry (DT, Packer).
What they still need is a WR2 and another cornerback. As such, it’s wise to select the best wideouts and corners available in your personal mock drafts, assuming general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah doesn’t swap out the number 23. In fact, we expect him to do just that.
The writing is on the wall. Choosing a WR or CB with the first few picks feels like the March 17th path.
