Five potential trades from D’Angelo Russell ahead of the 2023 deadline

Even if you’re not a fan or don’t follow Timberwolves trade news right now, you must have heard about the never-ending trade rumors surrounding D’Angelo Russell in 2023. The former runner-up is reportedly back on the trading bloc list, and it certainly makes sense.

Throughout the season, the former runner-up has averaged about 17 points and six dimes per game. While those numbers aren’t exactly bad for a third-goal option, they’re definitely not what the Timberwolves had in mind when they agreed to take his massive contract from the Golden State Warriors.

It’s obvious the Timberwolves haven’t fared well with their transactions lately, but there’s still a chance they can straighten the ship and rectify this mistake. However, that would mean separating Karl-Anthony Towns from his lifelong pal.

D’Angelo Russell 2023 trade rumors

D’Angelo Russell didn’t look like the all-star combo guard he was during his time with the Brooklyn Nets. Despite that, and despite struggling a lot since arriving in Minnesota, he’s still one of the best players available before the deadline.

We judged Russell primarily on how high he was as a draft pick and what the expectations were, plus his high salary. But it’s not that he can’t play or he’s an old player, so maybe he just needs to get back into the right situation.

With that in mind, several teams wouldn’t hesitate to take him out of the hands of the Timberwolves when it came down to it. They need to win back some picks or assets after losing one of the most one-sided trades in NBA history, so it certainly makes sense. So, without further ado, let’s take a look at the most likely trade rumors surrounding D’Angelo Russell in 2023.

The Dallas Mavericks fell behind offensively when they lost Jalen Brunson. They lack someone who can pick up some of the slack when Luka Doncic is off the ground, and also another playmaker who could take some creative duties and responsibilities off his shoulders.

Spencer Dinwiddie is coming off the bench much better than he started, and pairing Doncic with D’Angelo Russell would certainly give the Mavs an electric and dynamic backcourt, at least offensively. Of course they would struggle to get some stops, but it’s definitely worth the risk. Specifically, they could get him in exchange for Davis Bertans and Christian Wood.

The Phoenix Suns have been a hot mess for most of the season, and it’s obvious they need to do something if they’re to keep their hopes of the competition alive. So Russell has already hooked up with one of his two best friends and it didn’t work out, so he might as well try his luck with the other one: Devin Booker.

The Suns could see Ohio State stand out in a trade for Cameron Payne, Dario Saric, Jae Crowder and a second-round pick. They would finally drop Crowder from their roster and the Timberwolves would add plenty of depth and usable role players to help them make a playoff push rather than hold on to Russell and then lose him in free hands for nothing.

The Indiana Pacers were expected to be buyers before this year’s trading close. But they were way better than forecast so they might try to add more firepower and orchestrate a deep playoff run. Should that be the case, they could add the former All-Star alongside Tyrese Haliburton.

The Pacers could put Russell in a trade for TJ McConnell and Buddy Hield, who are likely to leave at some point anyway. Russell might not be thrilled with the idea of playing for another small-market team, but he could make the most of this platform to increase his value after a couple of bad years, especially considering he’s only a few left Months away from reaching free agency again.

The Miami Heat have been associated with just about every single big name in the league for quite some time. Pat Riley is reportedly desperate to land another star, but he’s been swinging at the fences and missing every opportunity. However, if you know Riley, you know he won’t go down without a fight and will continue to look for more firepower.

Kyle Lowry was, all things considered, a bust for the Heat. In this scenario, Timberwolves and Heat swap places hoping that a change of scene could bring back their former All-Star level. It’s a gamble, but Minnesota can always try to get rid of Lowry next season if things don’t work out with him on the floor.

And last but not least, we find the Toronto Raptors, a team that even CJ McCollum reported is on the verge of a massive roster overhaul. The Raptors haven’t managed to compete at the highest level this season, and while their future looks pretty bright, their veterans are reportedly fed up with the situation and would rather use their talents elsewhere.

The Raptors could look to bring Russell on board as a point guard going forward by sending Fred VanVleet and Khem Birch away to do so. They could later fire him for a reasonable fee and offer him perhaps the biggest role among any team potentially interested in his services.
