Charlize Theron is getting candid about her personal life.
The 47-year-old actress spoke to Harper’s Bazaar for their October cover issue about parenting, navigating the dating world and her experiences after 25 years in Hollywood.
“I feel like I’m in a place where it is what it is,” Theron said of her career. “I don’t think working more will change my profile. It was just always a mediocre ride. I’ve never been one of those people that’s on a Kim Kardashian level. But I feel like it’s just always been that thing.”
Theron grew up on a farm in South Africa, just outside of Johannesburg. At 16 she came to America to start a career as a model, which was the starting point of her career.
CHARLIZE THERON SAYS SHE IS ‘SHOCKING’ SINGLE: ‘SOMEONE JUST HAS TO GROW A PAIR AND RISER’
“I didn’t grow up in America,” Theron said, “so I’m always trying to stay afloat with the school system and the exams because it’s unfamiliar to me. My education was just so different than what my kids have in America. And so there are a lot of bells and whistles that come with being a parent I didn’t grow up with.
The Mad Max star touched on what Hollywood was like early in her career, saying she had to be “loud” to get noticed.
“The majority of my 20s and my 30s and the way I grew up was very much … it was a time when you had to be a loud b-ch just to find some space in the room,” she said. “I don’t necessarily like being that person, but there was definitely a time in my life when that was the only way I could function.”
Aside from being a devoted single mom to her two daughters Jackson, 10, and August, 7, for the past decade, she has found a balance in raising her children and balancing her career. The “Monster” actress adopted her two children.

“It’s so all consuming,” she said. “There are moments with my kids where I’m in the car and they’re in the back and they’re pulled over because I don’t want to lose a call. but i love it I don’t think I could do it if I didn’t love it.”
Theron founded her production company Denver & Delilah in 2003. “Having absolutely no control over what you wear is a big thing that really annoyed me for years,” she said of her career before starting her company.
“When a guy gives you a fitting almost in front of your eyes – that sort of thing is really demeaning. When I started there was no discussion about it. It was like, ‘This is what you wear.’ And I remember one film in particular, this male director, who just kept pulling me in, fitting after fitting after fitting after… And it was just so obvious that it had to do with my sexuality and how f-kable it was to me could make movie. And when I started, that was just the norm,” Theron explained.
A shift in the entertainment industry was something the longtime actress didn’t take lightly.

“There’s a natural struggle in me to want to create environments that feel like the things I would have wanted 30 years ago when I started,” she said. The Old Guard, which Theron produced, had an 85 percent female cast and crew, which she’s proud of.
“I don’t always get it right,” Theron said in her role as producer, “but I’m very conscious of looking at the big picture and saying, ‘Is this really the best thing we can do?'”
Aside from being a single mom balancing her career in Hollywood, she’s also found time to be a devoted fan of reality show The Real Housewives.
“I always say to my kids, ‘Just a little variety’, and my little one says, ‘Are you watching the housewives again?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, that’s me. … We’ll check out some Fellini later,'” she said.

The ‘Bombshell’ actress, who has been a single mom for the past decade, has shared that she is currently single and has no intentions of ever getting married.
“During COVID, someone was interested in doing this thing with me,” she said. “It was just a deep dive into a relationship. And I just thought, I don’t know if I want to. … I just feel so out of practice.”
