It’s been almost 35 years since Tim Burton Batman was unleashed on the world and completely changed the way people – let alone Hollywood – viewed superheroes. After decades in which the public’s image of Batman was primarily Adam West’s wisecracking, dancing Caped Crusader – a perfectly usable and secretly fantastic take on the character – here was a brooding, complex hero clad all in black rubber and leather. He didn’t joke, he didn’t smile, and he never, always twisted his neck.
Batman has the benefit of being set in a not-quite-real Gotham City, so it hasn’t aged or dated like a lot of movies from the era did. However, this is now a 35 year old film. Since then there have been nine Batman movies on the big screen and about half a dozen guys who have played the Dark Knight in various films and animations since then. If they hadn’t, or if Burton had tried Batman today how would it look like?
This newly edited trailer from DC Comics gives us a glimpse. It reworks the teaser for Burton’s classic with modern trailer tropes, especially the music. See what you think:
For comparison, here is the original 1989 trailer for Tim Burtons Batman:
This isn’t a bad trailer at all. But it definitely looks more like something that was released a few decades ago. (Also the weird Batman logo on Michael Keaton’s Batsuit that inexplicably has the extra dots on the wings. They fixed that Batman returns.)
Tim Burtons Batman is currently streaming on HBO Max.
