The 2023 Oscar nominations came out Tuesday morning, along with several nods for the box-office titan Top Gun: Maverickand the multiverse extravaganza Everything everywhere at oncethe announcements showed a drastic change in the presence of streaming video services among this year’s nominees.
Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX), Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) and apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), arguably the three biggest names in streaming, have collectively received 19 Oscar nominations this year — or barely half of the 37 nominations the three have received in 2022. This year’s drop came just a year after Apple (AAPL) won the Oscar for Best Picture KODAand Netflix (NFLX) took home a Best Director win with Jane Campion’s win the power of the dog.
This year, the Academy gave 16 nominations to Netflix (NFLX) films, nine of which went to the latest remake of nothing new in the West. The German-language production was nominated for both best film and best international feature film.
However, All quiet was the only film by a streamer to receive a Best Picture nomination. And overall, Netflix (NFLX) nominations are down from 27 a year ago.
For its part, Apple (AAPL) received just two Oscar nominations this year, one of them for Bryan Tyree Henry for Best Supporting Actor dam. Amazon (AMZN) received only one nomination, and that was in the Best International Feature Film category. Argentina, 1985.
While the streaming leaders have seen their chances of tucking Oscars in their trophy cabinets shrinking, traditional film studios have failed in nominations this year.
Everything everywhere at oncedistributed by independent studio A24, has featured all films with 11 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture The Banshees by Inisherindistributed by Walt Disney’s (DIS) Searchlight Pictures received nine nominations, including one in the Best Picture category.
Paramounts (PARA) Top Gun: Maverickwhich was the box office hit of 2022 with nearly $1.5 billion in worldwide ticket sales, received a total of six nominations, including one for best picture.
