(KTLA) – One man is dead and two others injured after a gunman opened fire just steps from the Hollywood Walk of Fame early Saturday morning.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, three men in their early to mid-30s were beaten as they exited a building near Hollywood Boulevard and Cherokee Avenue at 1:20 a.m.
All three men were shot multiple times.
One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other two were taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in stable condition.
According to the LAPD, very limited information was provided on the suspects, who fled in a northbound vehicle on Cherokee Avenue.
It’s not known if the shooting was gang-related, although Detective Sean Kinchla noted there were likely many witnesses.
“Hollywood is a very busy place, especially at 1 a.m. at night,” Kinchla told Nexstar’s KTLA. “They have clubs dropping out, restaurants opening and there have been a lot of people around.”
Local business owners are surprised by the incident as they say the area is generally safe.
“This is a tourist attraction, so don’t expect Hollywood and Cherokee shootings and murders,” said David Orr, who works at the nearby attraction Escape Hotel Hollywood. “This is our place, our home, our neighborhood.”
The police are still investigating and collecting information about possible suspects.
“Hollywood always has a very strong stake on the tabloid,” explained Kinchla. “At this point we are looking for witnesses and looking for videos that may have captured it.”
“As close as it was to Hollywood Boulevard, it’s surprising no one else was hurt,” said Art Mendoza, the owner of Happy Hollywood Tours.
