Sony confirms it will remove PS Plus Collection library in May | VGC

The PlayStation Plus Collection will soon be defunct, Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced.

As of May 9, the collection of 19 games will no longer be offered, SIE announced on Wednesday. Games can still be redeemed up to this date and will be available after that for users who remain PlayStation Plus subscribers.

The PlayStation Plus Collection is a collection of PS4 games made available exclusively to PS5 owners who are also members of the paid subscription service.

Sony has announced that the PlayStation 5 had its best sales quarter ever, selling 7.1 million units in the three months ended December 31, 2022 to reach 32 million consoles shipped.

That means PS5 console sales for the first three quarters of Sony’s FY 2022 have now reached 12.8 million, which is the best the console has achieved in a fiscal year (up 34% year over year).

It originally included 20 games (10 first-party and 10 third-party) before Persona 5 was removed in May 2022.

Collection includes God of War, Fallout 4, Mortal Kombat, Uncharted 4, Ratchet and Clank, Days Gone, Until Dawn, Detroit, Battlefield 1, Infamous Second Son, Batman Arkham Knight, The Last Guardian, The Last of Us Remastered, Resident Evil 7, Bloodborne and Monster Hunter World.

The feature was made available at PS5 launch in 2020 as a benefit only for owners of the new generation console.

At the time, SIE CEO Jim Ryan said he hadn’t decided yet whether the PlayStation Plus collection would expand beyond its original launch lineup.

“Well, we’ll see how the world takes on the Plus collection,” he told GQ. “They know what games are being played, how often they’re being played, before we make any decisions about them.

“We think it might be a great user acquisition tool. If you’ve never had a PS4 and decide to buy a PS5, you’re basically getting a PS4, right?

Ryan has said that a subscription model like Xbox Game Pass “makes no sense” for Sony’s first-party operation considering it’s focused on big-budget games.

Sony officially confirmed February’s PlayStation Plus Essential games on Wednesday. They are OlliOlli World, Mafia Definitive Edition, Evil Dead: The Game and Destiny 2: Beyond Light.
