DETROIT – A new grocery store opened Saturday in Detroit’s Linwood-Dexter neighborhood, offering fresh produce and healthy options in an area previously lacking in such options.
The owner, Sonya Greene, is a registered nurse who understands the importance of access to fresh fruit and veg.
Located in a 1,800-square-foot building that was once a liquor store, Linwood Fresh Market offers a selection of fresh produce, salads and sandwiches.
Greene worked for almost a year and a half to make her dream a reality. “I’m a little nervous, it’s my first rodeo, but I’m super excited,” said Greene.
Surrounded by fast food restaurants and party shops, the opening of Linwood Fresh Market is a game changer for the community. Many residents believe that having fresh groceries in the neighborhood is important.
The deal not only offers healthy options, but also represents new opportunities for Detroit entrepreneurs. “It’s been a long time coming and all of your support over the past 15 months and saying ‘keep it up’ has meant the world to me,” said Greene.
Fighting food deserts with one healthy option at a time, Linwood Fresh Market is a step forward in giving the community access to fresh produce.
