Silent Witness Southbay Ending Explained
For those who might be looking for a bit of clarification on Silent Witness Southbay’s ending, the investigation through the two Southbay Parts 1 and 2 focused on the murder of Carol Laing. Jack involved the Lyell Center as he helped his former mentor Bill Burnett process the crime scene after taking him back to Southbay in Silent Witness. Carol was the ex-wife of police officer Mike Laing, the mother of his sons, and the stepdaughter of Chief Superintendent Bridget Laing.
In Southbay Part 1 Mike’s girlfriend, Kate Freeman, was arrested and charged with Carol’s murder because of what later turned out to be circumstantial evidence. However, despite Bill’s negligence and the corruption discovered in the police force, she was in fact guilty.

She also nearly killed Bridget after her guilt was discovered by telling her, “In many ways you were to blame”.
After a drunken argument with Mike where he said the only way for his mother to return to CID as a uniformed police officer was to return to his wife, Kate set out to confront her boyfriend’s ex. . During the argument, Carol told Kate that if Mike was coming back to her, it was “because he wanted to” and not to please his mother and come back to CID.
Furious, Kate hit her with a dumbbell in the head and left her there. Afterwards, DI Andrew Walsh who was dating Carol arrived on the scene and saw his sister Lisa’s scarf near Carol’s unconscious body.

Panicked that Carol would identify Lisa as her attacker and she would go to jail, Andrew carried Carol upstairs and stabbed her. Nikki determined in the ending of Silent Witness Southbay if he had left Carol, the head wound from Kate’s earlier attack could have been fatal, so the two could be counted as murderers. Andrew later learned that Lisa had done no harm to anyone and so confessed to murdering Carol, as well as a criminal he had been trying to frame and admitted that he intended to kill Lisa as well.
Along with all of this and despite being exposed as a murderer, Kate was right to say that the disappearance of her police partner Fred Woods was suspicious. She had been suspended for telling Bridget Laing that another officer had threatened Fred and was corrupt.

It turned out he was, and he hired the criminal Andrew framed and another to scare Fred. Fred had escaped with his hands tied behind his back and tripped, hitting his head and drowning in a stream.
So the ending of Silent Witness Southbay had not one but three interwoven cases and crimes that were all solved, thanks in large part to Nikki and Jack’s investigative expertise and persistence.
Are Nikki and Jack still a couple in the end of Silent Witness Southbay?
Fear not, Nikki and Jack fans! As things were left at the end of Silent Witness Southbay, the Pathologist and Medical Examiner were still more than colleagues. On the contrary, the popular couple’s relationship seemed to have reached another level. In Southbay Part 1, Jack and Nikki freely said the all-important “I love you” to each other with some casualness during a phone conversation. The end of the final storyline brought them together for a beautiful final scene together on the beach at fictional Southbay and romance was very much on their minds.

Telling her boyfriend that Southbay had ‘developed’ her, the pathologist suggested they could return for an upcoming bank holiday weekend.
Jack’s verdict? Absolutely not! Laughing, Nikki protested that Southbay Beach was ‘romantic’ and as the couple got up and started walking on the sand, Jack hilariously quipped: ‘You and I have different ideas about romance in that case.”
Taking Nikki in his arms, Jack walked towards the sea, telling her not to dare try to drop her in it. Finally, he listened to his girlfriend’s call and put her down again.

The final shots at the end of Silent Witness Southbay showed Nikki and Jack as they run towards the shore before he disappears over the opera credits. So the ending of Silent Witness Southbay seemed to suggest that the couple’s relationship status wouldn’t change any time soon.
How long have Nikki and Jack been together on Silent Witness?
Dr. Nikki Alexander and Jack Hodgson have been together since the 25th Anniversary season opener, History Part 1. This followed a devastating story in season 24 Matters of life and death, part 2 when the co-workers kissed, only for Nikki’s one-night stand with a college student and a particularly emotional case to prevent any real conversation about it. Fortunately, they finally discussed it in History Part 1, leading to the two sleeping together for the first time. The rest was, fittingly given the name of the episode, history.

Although Jack was slightly shocked when he learned that Tom Faulkner in Silent Witness is Nikki’s ex-husband, they moved on from that and started the latest series of Silent Witness very much together. Admittedly, things seemed a bit shaky in Hearts of Darkness Part 1 and 2 when the mother of his niece Cara in Silent Witness arrived. Aoife Connelly is also Jack’s ex and she has made it clear that she still has feelings for him. He remained loyal to Nikki and eventually Aoife decided it was right for her to return to Northern Ireland as she didn’t want to be “just somebody” to Jack.
Since then, Nikki and Jack’s relationship hasn’t run into any major issues, and fans are no doubt excited to see where things could go for them in Silent Witness.

She said, “I’ve always said I’d like to do this job while I love it, and I still love it. And they might say, ‘No, we don’t want you to do that anymore,’ and he’s someone But I’ll forever look back on that time in my life, which is the best part of two decades, and I’ll think about how fantastically lucky I was to play someone I love, who shoots the best of her her life and her work, which I found infinitely fascinating.”
